Cutups are a technique used in painting and writing for producing random
results. You might take a Bible and cut out some interesting, dramatic
passages, then take a newspaper and cut out passages at random. Then
you mix them together and extract them, put them together to form a new
piece. The new piece is a garbled mess, but you know that the author
was trying to say something, so you rewrite it and clarify the
confusing parts.
Then maybe you repeat the whole thing.
Anyway, the results can be fascinating. I suspect it's a question of
personal taste, to a lot of people these are no doubt just a pile of
gibberish.
